The American Bar Association, the Gambian Minister of Justice, and the Gambian Ambassador to the US met this week in Washington to discuss a shared strategy to strengthen the rule of law and the justice sector in The Gambia. As The Gambia pursues justice for past violations and abuses through transitional justice processes, while also working to build its regular justice institutions, the ABA will provide technical advice to support these priorities. The Minister of Justice highlighted the significance of the support that the ABA and its partner Freedom House will provide with funding from the U.S Agency from International Development. ABA representatives discussed the role that the ABA as an independent Bar Association plays in the American legal context to strengthen the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. The meeting helped lay the foundation for a strong collaboration over the next five years to help cement The Gambia’s transition to a democracy with efficient justice institutions and a vibrant civil society.
