ABA ROLI and Internews Commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2021 in the Philippines

From May 4-6, the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) in collaboration with Internews, co-hosted a three-day roundtable discussion (RTD) to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2021. The RTD brought together representatives from key partners and institutions from the media and legal sectors, including the Integrated Bar of the Philippines and the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines to discuss common goals in advancing freedom of expression and challenges in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of journalists and lawyers as they perform their critical roles. Participants expressed a keen interest in sustained partnership between the two sectors and recommended exploring the feasibility of a formal partnership.

This event takes place under ABA ROLI’s current Access to Justice and Support for the Rule of Law in the Philippines Program (ACCESS), a program designed to bolster the rule of law and enhance access to justice in the Philippines.

The virtual attendees to the online session hailed from Metro Manila, the provinces of Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna in Southern Luzon, Pampanga and La Union in Central and Northern Luzon, and as far as Cebu and Negros Occidental in Central and Western Visayas.
