ABA ROLI Supports Marawi Hall of Justice After ISIS Attack in the Philippines

The Mayor of Marawi cuts the ribbon for the city's new Hall of Justice.

In 2017, consequent to the Philippines government’s attempt to arrest ISIL leader, Isnilon Hapilon, state forces clashed with ISIL fighters. After the Islamic Militants’ 2017 siege, much of Marawi City in the Philippines was destroyed and the Hall of Justice was badly damaged. In response, ABA ROLI conducted a rapid needs assessment, and replaced the stolen computers and filing cabinets looted by ISIL. Additionally, the Local Government Units (LGU) refurbished the buildings and the Supreme Court provided other essential equipment.

On August  2, 2018, members of the Supreme Court of the Philippines Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio, Justice Marvic Leonen who heads the Committee on Computerisation and Libraries, and Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez traveled to the Marawi Hall of Justice for a ribbon cutting ceremony of the Marawi Hall of Justice renovations. ABA ROLI was represented by County Director Robert La Mont, who surveyed the devastation and met with the Justices to ensure the logistics for equipment delivery. Judges, prosecutors, public and private attorneys from all over Mindanao also attended the event.

Supporting the rehabilitation of the Marawi City courts is one of several ways ABA ROLI is contributing to the resolution of the Philippines’ court case system, enhancing the public’s access to legal aid, and promoting government transparency and accountability.
