Director's Note: Welcome to ABA ROLI Around the World
Welcome to ABA ROLI Around the World, our revamped newsletter, designed to bring you news and insights from the world of rule of law development. ABA ROLI Around the World will highlight recent program innovations and successes. Drawing from ABA
ROLI's Rule of Law Insights Blog, it will also bring news of policy developments in the broader field, share profiles of change makers among our staff, volunteers, and partners, and highlight lessons learned in the field. In this way, ABA ROLI Around the World aims to reflect our organizational commitment to learning — mining the unique experience we have advancing the rule of law in the United States for almost 150 years and around the world for the past 25.
In this issue, for example, Lury Nkouessom, ABA ROLI’s Mali Country Director, highlights our work to combat slavery, Jay Monteverde, our Director of Global Environmental Programming, discusses the importance of placing restrictions on the use of lead paint, and Mary Greer, Senior Criminal Law Advisor for ABA ROLI, reflects on her recent trip to Pakistan to judge a moot court competition.
We launch this new newsletter at a time of significant challenges facing our field. In too many countries, the twin threats of rising authoritarianism and populist nationalism are threatening the rule of law, and progress of recent decades is receding. These rule of law gaps abroad cannot be walled off or ignored in our increasingly interconnected world, because their effects spill across borders and around the world in the form of environmental degradation, health pandemics, transnational crime, terrorism, and refugee flows that destabilize and strain host countries. So, we at ABA ROLI are redoubling our efforts to support colleagues around the world, develop innovative strategies, test them rigorously, and share what we learn with the broader community. We hope this newsletter will help us do so, and we welcome our readers' feedback and contributions to the effort.
