On September 14, to commemorate the International Day of Democracy, American Bar Association President Hillarie Bass wrote a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urging him to continue to prioritize the promotion of democratic values in U.S. diplomacy and development assistance. Earlier this month, Secretary Tillerson responded with a letter to Bass. In the below response, Tillerson states his desire to continue strengthening and supporting U.S. efforts to improve democracy, human rights, and governance. He also addresses aligning foreign assistance efforts within the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to advance freedom around the world.
