International Anti-Corruption Day

ABA ROLI’s Regional Anti-Corruption program (RACA) has been advancing anti-corruption initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region for more than a decade. With funding from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), RACA works in close collaboration with governments, local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international organizations to provide technical advice on a range of anti-corruption topics, including anti-money laundering and combating various corruption-enabled transnational crimes.

Since 2002, RACA has worked to combat corruption and promote transparency and integrity through educating government officials about anti-corruption best practices and strategies for combating transnational crimes; developing user-friendly guidance documents; building the capacity of governments and NGOs to promote anti-corruption efforts; and helping to broaden key stakeholders’ understanding of the practical implementation of regional and international anti-corruption conventions, including the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and Financial Action Task Force Recommendations. A key priority is to focus on new and emerging techniques to oppose corruption, such as through the use of open source intelligence. To engage anti-corruption agencies, civil society and individuals interested in the use of open source intelligence to combat corruption, the video (posted below) on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) for Anti-Corruption Agencies was produced.

The video presents key aspects of open source intelligence and features the Inter-Regional Workshop on the use of Open Source Data for Criminal and Financial Investigations of Corruption Crimes co-organized by ABA ROLI and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). In recognition of International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9, the video will be shown at an ABA ROLI-supported event bringing together over 600 people in Lao PDR, including civil society representatives, government officials, and the private sector, under the auspices of The State Inspection and Anti-Corruption Authority (SIAA). The focus of International Anti-Corruption Day this year is young people and their role in strengthening accountability and developing innovative solutions to prevent and curb corruption - such as through the use of open source information to promote transparency, accountability, and integrity.
