WageON: ABA ROLI and WAGE Join 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

Last month, ABA ROLI and Women and Girls Empowered (WAGE) consortium led by ABA ROLI joined the global community in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) - an international campaign which takes place every year from November 25 until December 10. For 2018, the UN Women team and the UNiTE campaign Global Youth Network are leading their advocacy theme entitled “Orange the World: #HearMeToo,” which calls upon participants to use the bright color in their efforts to address GBV. Together, they have also published a guide with 16 activities that the public can engage in to support women and girls.

GBV, deeply rooted in gendered social and cultural norms, is one of the most persistent human rights violations around the world, occurring in the family, in the general community, and in areas affected by conflict and displacement. Studies suggest that one in three women experience physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner. GBV has many forms and root causes, requiring holistic and cross-sectoral solutions. Responding to GBV is one of core objectives both for ABA ROLI and WAGE. ABA ROLI has addressed this issue through a wide array of prevention, protection, and accountability efforts across the world, including in the Balkans, China, the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guinea, Haiti, Tajikistan, and Tunisia. In addition, ABA ROLI, in collaboration with RIWI, is currently conducting a survey of global perceptions of GBV occurring online, in order to design effective strategies addressing such growing phenomena as cyberbullying and harassment. The program is implemented under USAID-funded Human Rights Support Mechanism (HRSM). At the same time, WAGE’s first initiative Reducing Barriers to Women’s Economic Empowerment in El Salvador and Honduras explores GBV as one of the barriers to female entrepreneurship.

In close partnership with the Center for International Private Enterprise, Grameen Foundation, Search for Common Ground, and 43 resource partners, ABA ROLI leads WAGE—a global programming consortium to advance the status of women and girls. WAGE works to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations in target countries to improve the prevention of and response to gender-based violence; advance the women, peace and security agenda; and support women’s economic empowerment.
